Topical Iodine–Induced Thyrotoxicosis in a Newborn with a Giant Omphalocele

INTRODUCTION Neonatal thyrotoxicosis is a life-threatening condition with potentially irreversible neurologic sequelae. Most cases are seen in neonates born to mothers with Graves' disease. Topical iodine-induced hypothyroidism has been reported in neonates, but iodine-induced neonatal hyperthyroidism has not been described; albeit a familiar entity in adults. CASE DESCRIPTION Herein we prese...

Amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis with paroxysmal supraventricular (ectopic atrial) tachycardia: case report and review of the literature

The most common side effects of amiodarone therapy include disruptions of thyroid function with the incidence range from 14-18% [1, 2]. In fact this antiarrhythmic drug is rich in iodine and during common therapy the oversupply of iodine is 50-100 times higher than its optimal intake. Moreover, due to its intrinsic qualities (not related to iodine load), such as structural resemblance to thyroi...

Treatment of thyrotoxicosis with low doses of radioactive iodine.

In a series of 156 thyrotoxic patients treated with low doses of radioactive iodine the therapeutic dose was calculated by means of a sliding scale in which the dose level was varied according to the estimated size of the gland. Of the patients so treated 56.5% achieved a remission with a single dose of (131)I. The incidence of hypothyroidism at one year was 5%.

Evaluation of Radioiodine Therapy in the Refractory Hyperthyroidism

Background: Thyrotoxicosis is a clinical state with potentially multiple etiologies, clinical presentations, and treatments. Thyrotoxicosis is a clinical condition that results from inappropriate function of thyroid hormone in the body tissues. During the early 1950s, radioactive iodine was used as a definitive treatment method. During the last two decades, radioactive iodine has been recognize...

Iodine excess and hyperthyroidism.

150 microg iodine are daily required for thyroid hormone synthesis. The thyroid gland has intrinsic mechanisms that maintain normal thyroid function even in the presence of iodine excess. Large quantities of iodide are present in drugs, antiseptics, contrast media and food preservatives. Iodine induced hyperthyroidism is frequently observed in patients affected by euthyroid iodine deficient goi...
